Artisan Name | John Van Sickle |
---|---|
Artisan Category | Quillwork |
Artisan Bio | I started doing quillwork about 1988 with tutorage from Loren Herrington and Robin Odle. Teaching anthropology focused on Great Lakes Native culture at Cranbrook Institute of Science was the beginning of a path of research which has led me across the US and Canada researching porcupine quillwork and other Great Lakes Native material culture. I take pride that my work is museum quality and true to period correct materials and techniques. Following the attacks on 9/11/2001, I reenlisted and my life took a much different course. After multiple deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan and subsequent retirement from the Army in 2020, I've returned to my previous interests and artwork. I also do trade silver and fingerweaving. |
