The 46″ two stage .68 caliber smooth bore barrel with brass fore-sight and sighting rib. Breech section with brass inlaid scroll engraved panel. Flat, banana shaped lock with bolster conversion utilizing the original cock with a curved extension secured in the jaws. Brass furniture compromises four brass ramrod thimbles, trigger guard with acanthus finial, side plate pierced and engraved with scrollwork, and the buttplate with slight (worn) engraving. Cherry wood stock. The club butt with relief band along belly from wrist to butt; the front 18″ of fore end replaced by a wooden rib. Lock is functional but barely. Definitely not for shooting (as NO antique musket should be)
Probably second quarter 18th century.
This was part of the Howard B. Greene Butterfield and Butterfield auction November 17th 1997. Estimate was $3000-4000. It hammered at $3750 + 15%
A nice Club Butt musket with an interesting and uncommon conversion.
