This is a very nice mountain style rifle made by Bill Spain of Richmond, Va. Bill retired as a Fire Captain but was always a machinist at heart. His guns are generally rather plain and dark but the fit and finish is exceptional. This rifle is lightly used as Bill hunted with this rifle and it is in almost new condition. It is stocked in a very nice piece of English walnut stained to a medium brown and finished with a hand-rubbed oil finish. The forend has a “V” shape to it as was often seen in eastern Tennessee rifles. There is no nose cap but it has a threaded brass rod screwed through from side to side to keep it from splitting. (This was also done on the rear of the forend next to the receiver on British No. 1 Mk3 rifles of WW2). The lock is an L&R Manton style flintlock. The lock and triggers were tuned by Bill and have a nice crisp trigger pull. The double triggers will fire set or unset. The barrel is ⅞” across the flats and is 39″ long in .40 caliber. The bore is mint. I haven’t pulled the barrel but it is most likely made by Getz Barrels. It has a touch hole liner. The steel parts are all deeply browned. The inlets are very tight and styling is very clean. Overall a very nice, well made rifle. Weight is 8 lbs. 1 ozs. Pull is 14″.
